Materials you'll need to make a Brideog Peg doll:
Step 1 - Body & Arms
Clothes peg for body
Cut off a 3-inch length from a bamboo skewer. User something to cut the skewer which will give you a clean edge without splinters (I’ve repurposed a pair of dog nail trimmers - as the dogs won’t let me use them on them)
Cut an approximately 20-inch thin strip of fabric. Secure one end onto the one end of the arm with scotch tape and then wind around the arm. going across the body, up and down the other arm then back to the center of the body.
Finish up the rest of the length by winding zig-zag around the body and secure by sewing onto the body
2. Step 2 - Head and Skirt
I like to incorporate special and meaningful fabrics, such as fabrics from friends or relatives who have died. It’s also a great way to incorporate pieces of jewelry, earrings and beads from people who are special to you. This also goes for natural pieces such as shells from a place that is meaningful to you.
Take a small piece of wool (tissue, fabric - anything suitable for padding) and wrap around the head. Place the square of fabric around the head, move the folds to the back of the head and secure with yarn (this will be covered by the headscarf).
Use a thick fabric for the underskirt, this will help give the doll body. I incorporate the frays in this piece of canvas. Fold over the top, pin in place and sew.
Create a dart by folding over a pinch of fabric to the left or right side and sew to secure it.
Keeping the dart to the front and slightly to the side of the doll. Sew the folded top of the skirt directly onto the fabric of the doll. Ensure the skirt stays under the arms.
Cut the fabric for the outer skirt - I cut it into a rough triangle shape. I find the rougher shapes create more interesting shapes (I like the bottom of the underskirt to be visible).
For the upper body clothing simply wrap some yarn around the body.
3. Step 3 - Hair and Scarf
Take some wool for the hair (which is optional) or several strands of yarn cut to the same length. Sew the hair into place and cut a long and not too wide triangle or the headscarf. You might want to sew the top of the headscarf in place on top of her head. Knot the scarf and sew into place.
Lastly, add any embellishments - maybe you'd like to tie a different color yarn around the waist. I've added a Brighid's cross and a shell.
