This doll is inspired by midwives - the women who tended to life coming into the world, and in some communities the women who tended to the end of life, midwifing those back home again.
These women spanned the thresholds of life, working in liminal places. The story of this doll spans back to pre-Christian times.
As a doll maker, I view myself as part of that ancient tradition which stretches back through countless generation to the folks who carved one of the oldest surviving figurines - the Woman of Holle Fells, and other figurines such as the Woman of Willendorf. While those stone figurines and early clay figurines have survived think of the thousands upon thousands of dolls make with intention with stone and fur, bone and feather that didn’t survive. Dolls made with intention are liminal beings and so you can work with this doll with things you are midwifing in your own life - honouring the beginnings and endings.
Making process design & embellishments
This doll is made over a wire armature so her arms are moveable. Her body is made from British core wool from UK small holdings (small farms). This style of doll is a half body doll, with no legs, allowing the fabric to hang and provide the length. .

Underskirts - Upcycled mixed fabric, frayed and unfinished
Dress - a mixed wool fabric purple with bronze
Pendant - is a stone with a hole drilled through (this is not a natural hagstone)
