This doll is inspired by the Banshee, Bean Sí in Irish , meaning woman of the fairy mound. She is a female Otherworld spirit whose keening, wail, or cry foretells a death (where the keeners are mortal women, who raised the keen within the wake). Banshee’s were related to old Irish families.
Historical descriptions depict the banshee in many different forms from tall with red hair, to small and in white clothing to covered faces in lament.
This doll is designed around some branches - which speaks to her announcing the death of the land, of species of animal and bird going extinct and the loss of insects - all at human hands.
‘I throw the small bones from the owl pellet, trying to discern their pattern but in the face of the great unravelling, I am unsure to whether I can hear the wail of the Banshee or the keening of the Bean Chaointe. One announces death while the other heralds a transformation’.
Excerpt taken from Who Laments the Great Unravelling by Jude Lally, published in Girl God Books Anthology - Grieving with Goddess.
