The Mari Lwyd is a curious creature: tall, with a horse head skull, wearing a white cloak adorned with bells and bones. Her name is Welsh, meaning grey mare and today she still forms part of ancient customs which occur in the darkest days of mid-winter. She attends wassailing events and dances with Morris groups and Mummers.

Mari is the Star Horse, the Horse of Death, the Horse of the Frost, the Horse of the Dark Night, the original Nightmare. That great spirit horse who looked after the herds, honored by the people who followed the herds.

The symbol on the doll is one i created - inspired by the ancient cup and ring markings from stones throughout the UK and the world.

Making Process & Details:

Her body is made of wool by a needle felting process and the 3D printed head is sewn on. Her cloak is grey cotton cheesecloth. Her headpiece is made from cotton cheesecloth, eyelash yarn, and adorned with 3 cowrie shells.

Her jaw is moveable, and can stay in an opened or closed position.
