Herring Picker Sheena Macleod Doll. Vintage doll. Scottish Doll.
Sheena Macleod was a world famous award winning Scottish doll maker. She made 12 character styles of dolls, from women who gathered seaweed and lichen for dying tweed, to fishwife and knitter and spinners from the Highland and Islands.
All the fabrics are Scottish made, the hands and feet made from clay. The body is made of cloth over a wire armature and the hair is real lambswool.
Her original tag reads:
This character doll is a herring picker, and her tag reads:
Fisherlassies 'travelled the herring' along the east coast in the fishing seasons during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Working in teams, two would 'gip' (gut) while one neatly packed the herring between layers of salt. A cooper would hammer the 'head' on the barrel and brine was poured into the bung hole, thus picking the fish.
