In the fields above Loch Lomond, not too far from my favourite hill - Carman Hill, stands a single standing stone, which was part of a burial chamber.
The stone stands around 5 feet tall, with a jumble of rocks around it - rocks which were once assembled to hold the body of someone given an impressive grave.
There were items found in the grave, a broken polished stone axehead and a deposit of quartz stones.
This standing stone weaving, is inspired by that lone portal stone - what stories it could tell us. The weave of the background are muted mustards and olives - marking autumn and our decent into the dark months.
Materials
The main background – a mix of natural dyed pure wool (from the Isle of Colonsay) to synthetic olive yarns.
The stone – needle felted with lichen inspired French knot embellishment
Additional embellishments – Ash twig and limpet shell
Measurements
The embroidery hoop has a diameter of 8 inches / 20 cm
